WEST BADGER RD / BERTRAND CREEK BRIDGE NO. 50 REPLACEMENT

Project Details

Client Name: Whatcom County
Construction Cost: $1.94 Million
R&E was the prime consultant for the federally funded multi-disciplinary design team charged with removal and replacement of the existing three span structure.  The design effort included alternatives analysis to review various structure lengths and girder types, ultimately settling on a 100 ft. single span precast concrete girder bridge.  Particular challenges included the design of a relatively short length pile foundation system targeted to stay within a dense sandy soil layer, avoiding punching through into a soft alluvium layer which would have significantly increased the foundation costs.  Scour protection provided another challenge to protect the structure and approaches from potential future lateral channel migration.  In addition to leading the design team, R&E provided civil roadway horizontal and vertical design to avoid impacts to an adjacent intersection.  During the construction phase, the design team remained onboard providing construction support services to Whatcom County.
